Is food ok to eat one day after the use by date?

It depends on the type of food and how it has been stored. Some foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, should be consumed before the use-by date and may not be safe to eat after that date. Other foods, such as canned goods and dried pasta, may still be safe to eat after the use-by date, but may not be at their best quality. It is always best to use your own judgement and trust your senses to determine if a food is safe to eat. If the food has a bad smell, discolouration or mould, it’s best to discard it.

Some additional things to consider when determining if food is safe to eat past its use-by date include:

  • Foods that have been stored properly in a cool, dry place and have been sealed tightly are more likely to be safe to eat past the use-by date than foods that have been exposed to heat, light, or air.
  • Foods that are high in moisture, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, are more likely to spoil quickly than dried or canned goods.
  • Foods that are highly perishable, such as meat, dairy, and seafood, should be consumed within the use-by date and should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer to extend their shelf life.
  • Foods that are made with preservatives, such as canned goods, may last longer than those that do not contain preservatives.
